KANO STATE REVERTS SA’ADATU RIMI UNIVERSITY TO COLLEGE OF EDUCATION STATUS

By Musbahu Bala Cediyar Yan Gurasa

Kano – In a significant move, the Kano State Executive Council has approved the conversion of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education back to its former status as Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, effective September 18, 2024.

This decision aims to enhance the quality of education and maintain effective management in the state’s higher education sector. The conversion was made after extensive consultations with stakeholders and a high-powered committee’s recommendation to address concerns about the potential negative impact of university status.

According to sources, the concerns included the risk of losing experienced lecturers, salary-related conflicts, and administrative challenges. These concerns were primarily driven by the institution’s strategic location, serving students from non-metropolitan areas.

The council noted that similar institutions have successfully operated as colleges of education while offering degree programs under the “Dual Mode” introduced by the NCE regulated Body.

The current undergraduates will continue their studies uninterrupted, and the institution will retain its degree-awarding status. The college will also continue to offer traditional courses and additional degree programs. The university’s certificate will be preserved for future use.

In a related development, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has dissolved the university management and directed the Vice Chancellor to hand over affairs to his senior Deputy.

This strategic decision underscores the state government’s commitment to ensuring stability and growth in its higher education institutions while addressing stakeholder concerns.
