Dangote Up-Skills Host Communities in Sustainability Campaign
The Sustainability team of the Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana plant, headed by Dr Eseosa Ighile in its efforts to assist students in their studies,has embarked on training of secondary students from catchment areas on practical skills.
The company has also aligned its Sustainability Framework to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its drive to mitigate environmental and social challenges in Nigeria.he said
She also disclosed that ” We also embarked on a Community Waste Clean-Up Exercise, successfully clearing waste dumps around the Obajana community. Similarly, we organised a Skills Development Workshop for secondary school students from catchment communities, with the theme “waste to wealth,”
Commenting on skill development, Dr. Ighiles said that students who were drawn from host communities learned skills to convert plastic waste into crafts and make healthy drinks to sustain their daily needs.
Some of the environmental achievements include cleaner surroundings after our community clean-up, a deeper understanding of biodiversity at the company’s mining sites, and a focus on sustainable consumption and waste reduction.
Some members of the communities,who spoke on the occasion, described the Sustainability programme of the company as very impactful, saying the company is positively changing the physical and the social landscape of host communities.
